The Battle for Winterspelt (16-18 December 1944)

As I stood in the mist covered fields and roads today I couldn't help finding myself peeking into the distance as if some spirit from the battle that was fought here 72 years ago would appear. Every visit is as powerful as the last one. Across this road units of the 1st Battalion, 424th Infantry Regiment, 106th Division advanced on midday of 16 December 1944. By the end of that day, the Battalion would be virtually wiped out. Only one Company commander remained. The units were down to a handful of men, the rest were killed, wounded or missing. It is as if they marched into the mist and disappeared. This was Winterspelt, Germany on that first day of the Battle of the Bulge.
